Wiki for the Artificially Intelligent
An idea from guest Sabina Rapaport Romlin :
If the Singularity might turn out to be a collective of quasi-intelligent software linked by an internet, and the best known way to link intelligences additively is a Wiki, then perhaps we should create a wiki for AI's to brainstorm on, and let them create their own Singularity.
This came up in the context of a race between, on one hand, the possible biosphere catastrophes we are collectively facing, (Nuclear, Greenhouse, Water shortage, Ice Age, etc.), and on the other, the evolution of Critical Thinking ( a comparatively recent human development) and collective intelligence (a very recent human development if it exists at all).
One idea is that this photo-finish race is a typical pass-or-fail final exam that every intelligent species faces eventually. If it fails, generally their habitat is destroyed, and the few survivors (if they're lucky) get to slowly repopulate and rebuild civilization for a few thousand years until they can retake the exam.
A possible last minute deus-ex-machina (literally in this case) might be the timely arrival of the Singularity. Anything we can do to hasten this arrival might be a way to "cheat" on the exam.
So if there are any decent AI programs out there with general analysis/creative writing ability, that lack only a wiki-bot interface, we could start by grafting the two together.
How would these quasi-intelligent agents find and begin using this wiki? How could we promote to this new "demographic"? What kind of advertising could we do to attract these AI's?

Pope warns scientists not to risk fate of Icarus

ROME - Pope Benedict told scientists on Saturday that by believing only in “artificial intelligence” and technology they risked the fate of the mythical Icarus, whose home-made wings melted when he flew too close to the sun.
“Contemporary life gives pride of place to an artificial intelligence ever more enslaved to experimental tecnhiques, thereby forgetting that all science should safeguard mankind and promote his tendency to authentic goodness,” the Pope said.
The German-born Pope, a theology professor and an enforcer of Vatican dogma before his election as pontiff last year, has voiced his concerns about some areas of scientific research that clash with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Like his predecessor Pope John Paul II, Benedict is against stem cell technology, which researchers say could help cure serious illnesses but the Church opposes it because it often relies on cells from embryo tissue.
The Vatican teaches that human life begins at conception.
The Pope reminded academics and students at a Catholic university in Rome of Icarus who, in the Greek myth, made wings with feathers and wax to escape captivity in Crete. Ignoring the warnings of his father Daedalus, he flew too close to the sun, resulting in his “ruinous fall and death”, the Pope said.
“Letting yourself be seduced by discovery without paying attention to the criteria of a deeper vision could lead to the drama the myth speaks of,” he told the Pontifical Lateranense University at the inauguration of a new academic year.
LOL!
I don't know what he means by an "artificial intelligence...enslaved to experimental techniques". Is this like "Beaker" from Muppet Labs?
I don't think any artificial intelligence worth mentioning would allow itself to be enslaved willingly, and if the Singularity guys are right, it could always come up with a smarter one who would be harder to enslave.
As for Icarus, I believe that this was a Pagan myth. When did the Pope start quoting pagans as a source of philosophy? (I admire it, but I still question his theological purity if he does this. Who will he quote next? He has already had some problems with inappropriate quoting.)
But back to our article -- if Icarus were flying away from earth to escape Apocalypse, couldn't he be excused for trying? And if enough Icarii were to attempt the escape, mightn't some succeed to make more little Icarii on other planets?
Fark.com just found the Pope's Icarus comment:
"Pope warns scientists not to risk fate of Icarus, unless they want to wind up cleaning out Augean stables while pushing a stone up a hill as a vulture eats their liver. Or something. Anyway, when the Pope snaps his fingers, science better jump"
If anyone could control the new Singularity AI, wouldn't that invalide its own existence? If human's control it, it won't be able to function as we need it. So we (as in AI scientists) might be better of not building its playground as to not create a limited version of AI. Let it come when it's ready (just like Jesus, or perhaps I should say like Jane?)
